=========================================================================== Archive Maintainer : This is an updated version of the sci2023.wad I recently submitted to the archives. This version contains a LANGUAGE lump with the proper obituaries for the new monsters. Some minor changes were also made to this text file. Please replace the previous sci2023.wad and sci2023.txt with these new versions. Sorry for the inconvenience. Update to : sci2023.wad Advanced engine needed : Limit removing source port for Doom2 Primary purpose : Single play =========================================================================== Title : Scientist 2023 Filename : sci2023.wad Release date : August 2023 Author : Roland van der Velden Email Address : [redacted] Other Files By Author : sci.wad sci2.wad Misc. Author Info : www.spaceisgreen.com Description : Description : ########################################## # 1. What is Scientist 2023? # ########################################## This is a slightly modified version of SCIENTIST, the official Add-on for Doom and Doom2, which was released by Bethesda August 10, 2023. This new version is made to be compatible with most limit removing source ports for Doom2. About Scientist: This partial conversion is a heavily upgraded version of 'Sci2.wad' from 2005 and is a perfect mix of classic and modern elements. You play as the Doom space marine and fight against the evil Scientist, who has unleashed the hordes of Hell. It includes: * 20 maps including city, Arctic and other-worldly settings * new textures and graphics * 3 new enemies; the Scientist, Scidemon and Sciscorpion * 3 new weapons * 3 new MIDI Music tracks * Cool effects like glowing eyes, rocket trail and exaggerated blood * It supports Multiplayer Coop and Deathmatch up to 4 players. Changes since the Official Add-on: 1: This is a pwad and not an iwad. You will need to run it together with Doom2.WAD. 2: Titlepic, Interpic and Statusbar are now 320 pixels wide instead of 426. 3: DOOM(1) music was replaced with MIDIs from DOOMII. 4: fixed a texture error. ########################################## # 2. How to use Scientist 2023 # ########################################## In all cases you will need you need a copy of the original Doom2 (at least the Doom2.WAD). .------------------------------------------------. | A: For ports like GZDoom, Eternity, PrBoom | '------------------------------------------------' Load the sci2023.WAD like any other pwad. Usually: simply drag it onto the port EXE file. The WAD file contains an internal DEH file, so in most cases the separate sci2023.DEH file is not needed. .------------------------------------------------. | B: Unity port | '------------------------------------------------' There is probably no need to use this version of Scientist in the Unity port. Use the official version instead. You can download it in-game from the Add on menu in both DOOM (classic) and DOOMII. .------------------------------------------------. | C: Chocolate Doom | '------------------------------------------------' - Put doom2.WAD, sci2023.WAD and sci2023.DEH in the Chocolate-Doom folder. - Run Chocolate Doom with the following command line: CHOCOLATE-DOOM -DEH SCI2023.DEH -MERGE SCI2023.WAD [You can make a TXT file with this command and then rename it to a BAT file] .------------------------------------------------. | D: DOS | '------------------------------------------------' The most retro old-school way to play Scientist is on DOS, just like the origial DOOM back in 1993. The easiest way to run it on DOS is with BOOM 2.02. There are other ways, but they will not be described here. - Put doom2.wad, sci2023.WAD and sci2023.DEH in the BOOM202 folder. - Go to this folder on DOS (for example using DOSBox) - type command: BOOM -FILE SCI2023.WAD -DEH SCI2023.DEH The game should be stable, though it can slow down. Please note: * Under DOS the demos will play out of sync. * Scientist was not intended to work with the original Doom2.EXE. It was designed for a limit removing port. It is possible to run it with the orginal Doom2.EXE, but the maps will quickly cause the game to glitch and even crash. This is because of technical limits of the original EXE. ########################################## # 3. History of Scientist # ########################################## -I released the first iteration of Scientist to the idgames archives back in 2002. This wad was called Scientist (sci.wad) and contains 11 maps. -In 2005 I uploaded the second iteration called Scientist 2 (sci2.wad) to the archives. It contains the same 11 maps plus 9 new maps. -Unity release: In August 2023 a heavily polished and updated version of sci2.wad was released by Bethesda as an official Add-on for Doom/DoomII named "Scientist" (and the file is named "19"). -The wad that goes with this text file is called Scientist 2023 (sci2023.wad) and is meant to make the wad compatible with most limit removing source ports for Doom2. It was submitted to the idgames archives in August 2023 following the Unity release.
